Five reasons to sign up to Great Strides Brecon Beacons

Batman, Bethlehem and bucket-loads of stars - there's everything you could want and more at the Great Strides Brecon Beacons trek!

In this section

1. Llyn Cwm Llwch

On the north-west face of Pen y Fan this glacial lake has an invisible enchanted island of fairies, or so the story goes... It is said that a door in a rock would open each year on May Day, revealing a passageway that led to the island. Welcoming and hospitable fairies inhabited this magical place and gladly entertained any visitors but they warned everyone to take nothing from the island as it was sacred. One year, a selfish visitor stole a flower and since then the door to the island has never reopened. Now, we can’t promise a trip to meet the fairies, but we can certainly promise breath-taking views.

2. Batman

Henrhyd Falls near Coelbren features as the entrance to the Batcave in The Dark Knight Rises. The tallest waterfall in the Brecon Beacons National Park has even been made more accessible to visitors, with improvements to the trail that leads to it, so it’s easier than ever to take that perfect selfie (and that’s really the most important thing, isn’t it?)

3. Bethlehem

This little farming village on the edge of the National Park has no permanent post office and is instead visited by a mobile Post Office van once a week for an hour. However, its name attracts thousands of visitors every Christmas, who travel from far and wide to post their cards so that their envelopes will be stamped with a seasonal postmark from Bethlehem.

4. Stars

The Brecon Beacons National Park is an International Dark Sky Reserve, with an outstanding quality of night sky. This status was given in 2013 and was only the fourth location in the UK to be given this status (and the first in Wales!). Although we will add, if you’re still on your walk when the stars are out, you might be in trouble!

5. And finally...

Still need convincing? Maybe this will do the trick.
